Handmade Candles vs. Mass Produced Candles

June 26, 2020

Does the kind of candle you buy really matter? If you have a candle obsession like we do, then the answer is yes. And while you might already know some of the major benefits of choosing handmade candles over the mass-produced options, it never hurts to get a quick refresher as to the reasons you need to put down the generic candle and instead shop for custom, hand-painted candles instead.

The Wax on Handmade Candles

One of the most important factors in buying a candle is the wax. Three of the most common candle bases are as follows:

  • Paraffin
  • Beeswax
  • Soy

Paraffin candles are the most common choice for candles as they give a strong scent for a lower amount of fragrance. This makes these candles more affordable to produce but still provides for a strong scent when burning. Most of the mass-produced candles you will find in the store are produced with paraffin.

The downside to paraffin comes when manufacturers choose low-quality wax to cut costs and mass-produce their candles more affordably. The lower quality paraffin can sometimes be toxic and will usually leave soot on walls when burning. This makes mass-produced candles less than ideal for getting a clean burn.

At Flatyz, all of our candles are handmade using only highly-refined paraffin wax that is 100% clean burning. These smokeless candles are manually poured and decorated ensuring a consistent and quality candle every single time. Because we use the purest paraffin wax, our candles are smokeless, dripless, and self-extinguishing.

The Wicks on Handmade Candles

Many mass-produced candles come with wood wicks or cotton wicks. Certain lower quality cotton wicks can contain traces of metal, such a lead, to help them stand up straighter and burn a little better. While visually this is appealing, it can lead to issues of metal being vaporized into the air that is then inhaled by anyone within close proximity.

At Flatyz, all of our wicks are made of only organic cotton. By using raw materials for our paraffin, wicks, and paints, we can ensure our candles are safe for the environment, safe for the user, and the highest quality possible.

The Decorations on Handmade Candles

While mass-produced candles are more easily accessible, they typically only come in a standard jar or taper style. These candles provide limited options when it comes to home decor and gifting.

With handmade candles, every candle has the opportunity to be something completely unique. We pride ourselves on ensuring every single candle is hand-crafted and hand-painted to ensure every customer gets a unique piece of art. We use only the highest quality paints on our candles to ensure a clean burn and a beautiful decor piece.

Ultimately, if you are looking for a clean-burning, healthier alternative to traditional store-bought candles, we recommend shopping Flatyz. All of our candles are made with love and that is something you just can’t get when you buy mass-produced options. Shop today
